Bad Credit

Will Costco’s fall lineup disappoint you this year?

Things could really go either way.

Key points

  • Costco offers rotating items at competitive prices.
  • While the retail giant often stocks a slew of fall-specific items, this year supply may be limited.

As someone who shops at Costco every week, I can say with certainty that certain items are pretty much a mainstay. I’m talking about things like milk, salad mixes, fruit bowls, paper towels and a range of household cleaners.

But Costco is also known for rotating seasonal items. During the holidays you will find Christmas decorations, gift baskets and a larger selection of toys and games. And during the summer, you’ll often see things like beach towels, swimwear, and pool accessories.

Since I’m a fan of all things fall, one of my favorite times to shop at Costco is mid-September to early October. In the past, I’ve bought everything from lawn decorations to cozy sweatshirts that relieve the chill of hiking on a chilly October morning. In fact, I usually make it a point to look for these items a few weeks before fall, because that’s when they tend to arrive in stock.

But so far this year, I haven’t been too impressed with Costco’s fall deals. For example, most years Costco has a number of Halloween costumes that my kids can choose from. This year the crops were so thin that we had to order costumes elsewhere (and pay more).

Of course, there is still time to go there before the end of autumn. But I can’t help but wonder if Costco’s selection will be lacking this year.

Supply chain issues could be an issue

Last year, many people struggled to stock up on Christmas gifts as supply chains slowed due to the pandemic. This year, supply chains don’t look as badly damaged, but they haven’t fully recovered either. And that means some retailers, including Costco, may not have the same selection of seasonal items their customers have come to expect.

In addition, inflation has driven up the cost of goods, which affects most people’s personal finances. And that’s something that Costco can be particularly sensitive to.

Costco prides itself on its affordable prices. If he cannot sell seasonal items at a reasonable price, he may choose not to stock them for fear of discouraging customers. And I feel like that’s part of the reason why I don’t see my usual line of fall products.

Will fall stocks pick up?

Since it’s not even October, it’s fair to say that Costco’s fall inventory selection may increase over the next few weeks. But we may not see the same selection that we have had in recent years.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though – at least not for me. Since I’m what you might call obsessed with scraps, I tend to overdo this particular expense category. So if Costco doesn’t offer a larger fall lineup, that means I couldn’t have as large a credit card tab as I normally would at this time of year.

Granted, I can choose to take some of that savings and splurge on pumpkin spice lattes instead. Because when you’re a fan of fall like me, you do what you can to savor the season before winter arrives.
