In-store electricity prices increase for Meralco customers in August

MANILA, Philippines – Higher electricity bills await customers at Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) as several areas face strict shutdowns this month, not thanks to more transmission and generation charges students.

In a statement released on Monday, the country’s largest electricity distributor said the overall tariff increased by P 0.0965 per kWh in August, translating to a P19 increase in the total bill for a typical household. with an average monthly consumption of 200 kWh.

Meralco said the adjustment would have been higher had it not been for an ongoing repayment of the 13.9 billion peso “payout rate adjustment” that began last March and will be implemented. over a 24 month period.

“This month’s rate is still lower than the pre-pandemic rate – when it settled at P9.5674 in August 2019 and P10.2190 in August 2018 – evidence that the series of calls from MERALCO’s offerings resulted in lower electricity costs, ”the company said. noted.

In August, transmission charges – which refer to the regulated cost or charges for using a transmission network – increased by P7323 per kWh for residential customers due to “ancillary service charges plus high prices ”that Meralco paid to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

Production costs, meanwhile, edged up by P 0.0615 per kWh this month. Out of order, energy prices from the Electricity Supply Agreements and Wholesale Spot Electricity Market (WESM) declined by P 0.0347 and P 2.6903 per kWh, respectively, due to better supply conditions and lower demand in a cooler temperature environment.

But Meralco said it paid more to independent power producers (IPPS), where it got 40.8% of its energy needs in August. IPP increased the fee by P 0.7389 per kWh as the weak peso makes oil imports more expensive, while Malampaya’s natural gas becomes more expensive following a quarterly price review.

As it stands, the rate hike would come at a difficult time for some Meralco customers in the tightly locked areas. Metro Manila is said to be under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) from August 6 to 20 to stop the spread of the Delta variant. Laguna is on ECQ from August 6 to 15 while the same level of community quarantine is imposed on Bataan from August 8 to 22.

However, the electric utility said it would not cut power lines to consumers who miss payment deadlines in areas under ECQ and less stringent ECQs amended to help ease the burden on its stranded customers. Elsewhere, Meralco said it offered installment payment terms to customers with unpaid invoices.
