‘Hats For Heat’ Helps pay high heating bills

Reeder Brother’s Fuel Services sells hats to raise money to pay people’s heating bills.

LYCOMING COUNTY, Pennsylvania – As winter temperatures continue to dip below freezing, more people will turn up the heat in their homes.

However, with rising heating prices, some people will struggle to stay warm.

Montoursville-based Reeder Brother Fuel Services has found a way to help these folks.

“I bought hats for my brothers and myself with our company name on them and there was a lot of interest in the hats. So I thought about it and thought we could help a lot of people if we sold these hats,” Vince said. Reeder from Reeder Brother’s Fuel Services.

The company has hundreds of hats for sale. Each hat costs $25. The profit from each sale will go to people who cannot keep up with rising heating prices.

“Our cost is over three dollars a gallon for fuel oil and that adds up pretty quickly and when we have these very cold months it goes up pretty quickly,” Reeder said.

In addition to the hat sale, a fundraiser will be held on January 29 at the Loyalsock Hotel on Route 87 just north of Montoursville. There will be food, a 50/50 raffle and a basket auction. 10% of hotel sales that day will go directly to the “Hats for Heat” campaign.

“From 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. We will start with breakfast, then lunch and dinner. We will have evening entertainment,” said Evan Mumma, the owner of the Loyalsock Hotel.

Hats can be purchased during the event.

“We’ll be taking orders all day if we run out. But we have about 2,000 orders coming in so far,” Reeder added.

Vince Reeder told Newswatch 16 that he plans to do this “Hats for Heat” campaign every year. Next year, he hopes to add more clothing items such as shirts and jackets.
