Corpus Christi bills cheaper than the national average

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Information from mobile and online app Doxo found a household in Corpus Christi, on average, pays less on their bills than the national average.

“I know everyone is suffering from the cost of inflation and things are going to go up and you just have to accept it and absorb it,” Corpus Christi’s John Schena said. “Overall, I think we’re in a pretty good place here in Corpus Christi.

“It’s very surprising to me because everything else is really high,” Corpus Christi’s Maritza Sanchez said. “I guess it’s a tourist spot, the bills would be a lot higher.”

Doxo is an all-in-one app where you can pay your bills in one place. They found the averages of the top ten household bills, namely mortgage or rent, car loans, car insurance, utilities, health insurance, cable and internet, cell phone, alarm and security and life insurance.

The national average was $2,003 per month, up from last year, and is now over the $2,000 mark. Corpus Christi households pay an average of $1,808 per month.

Director of Doxo Insights Liz Powell said that means Corpus Christi feels a bit more affordable.

“We believe that by making this data available, it helps consumers,” Powell said. “Because, if you are armed with knowledge, it justifies negotiating a lower rate on your cable, for example, much louder.”

Averages were collected anonymously from over 6 million uses of the app.

The data was broken down even further by showing what percentage of the Corpus Christi sample pays for each utility. For example, it shows that 71% of the sample size pays for a car loan.

You can also view the average for each category compared to the national average. So while Corpus Christi households pay less overall, they pay more for utilities.

“It’s usually weather related,” Powell said. “In some cases it’s when cities face cold weather, but in the case of Corpus Christi it’s hot weather.”

“You know, I guess the utilities… it seems like it’s something that they always do a $2, $3, $4 increase every six months, a year or so,” said Schena said. “So for me, I’m paying about $100 a month for utilities and I don’t feel like it’s that bad.”

The data also displays information about nearby towns. For example, Portland homes pay an average of $2,111 per month, slightly more than the national average, while Alice homes pay less than Corpus Christi at $1,674.
